British Values

Overview of the 5 British Values

At St. Mary's, we believe in fostering a safe and inclusive environment where every child can thrive. Our commitment to British values helps us build a community where respect, tolerance, and fairness are at the heart of everything we do. We always ensure that these values are taught with reference to and a focus on our Catholic Faith. Here’s a brief overview of the five key British values we promote in our school:

  1. Democracy
We teach our students about the importance of democracy and encourage them to be active participants in their school community. Through activities such as voting for school council representatives and discussing various viewpoints, children learn the value of making decisions together and respecting others' opinions.

  2. The Rule of Law
Understanding and respecting the rule of law is essential in our school. We help students recognize the importance of laws and rules both in school and in society. By following clear guidelines and reflecting on why rules are in place, children learn about responsibility, safety, and fairness.

  3. Individual Liberty
We promote the freedom for students to make their own choices while understanding the consequences of those choices. Encouraging independence, self-expression, and the right to hold different beliefs helps students to develop confidence and a sense of personal responsibility.

  4. Mutual Respect
Respect is a cornerstone of our school community. We teach students to value and respect each other’s differences, whether they be cultural, religious, or personal. Through classroom discussions and collaborative activities, children learn to treat everyone with kindness and consideration.

  5. Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our school embraces diversity and encourages students to appreciate and learn from different cultures and religions. By exploring various traditions and beliefs, children develop an understanding of the rich tapestry of our community and the importance of accepting and valuing others’ perspectives.

At St. Mary's, we strive to embed these British values in everything we do, helping our students grow into thoughtful, respectful, and responsible individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to society.
